New Toy and A Couple of Great Films

I’ve recently acquired a new toy. It’s a Motorola Q phone. Sure, I bought it used and it’s got an occasional ding from the previous owner, but I have come to really like this device. I’ve visited numerous Motorola Q-focused web sites (http://www.everythingq.com/ is the best so far), and have even gone so far as to install a home screen (the default display) that mimics the iPhone… on a Windows Mobile device. There’s a lot more I want to do with this device - install some cool applications, figure out how I can REALLY manage my time with the calendar tool (which I have synced with my Google calendar), etc.

But enough about that, let’s talk movies!

I’ve recently seen two fantastic movies that I want to encourage you to see. They are vastly different, but are fantastic examples of what their respective genres have to offer. They are “Death At A Funeral” and “Sunshine.”

“Death At A Funeral,” directed by Frank Oz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, Muppets), is one of my favorite comedies that I’ve ever seen. It has a well-balanced mix of subtle laughs and in-your-face funny. Little people, drugs, naked men and the general discomfort felt at a funeral all come in to play here. The casting is great - in particular, Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Serenity, Knight’s Tale). He is the best part of the whole movie.

The other movie is a not-so-light-hearted science fiction piece. “Sunshine” is easily in my top five sci-fi movies. It spent VERY little time in theaters and is now out on DVD. I will not spend time here telling you who’s in it or even what it’s about. I will tell you that it’s not a horror flick - there’s no aliens trying to kill people off. There’s no extra-dimensional portal letting scary things out. It’s a story of heroes (not the super kind) and the conflicts they encounter along their heroic journey. One of the best parts is that the special effects (which are SPECTACULAR) only serve to drive the story. The effects are not included just for the sake of being visually appealing. This is probably why it didn’t last long in theaters - I didn’t have a chance to see it on the big screen, which is very disappointing. This movie doesn’t have the big-banging action of a Michael Bay flick. Do me a favor: watch this movie. I’m betting you’ll like it.

So, enjoy the movies. I’m off to play with my new toy.
